Form 888 today

Form 888 changed in 2023. Many templates online haven't.

Since July 2023 it's no longer a statutory declaration, so the JP, the “declared at” box and the qualified person are gone. Anyone 18 or over who knows you both can make one; they no longer have to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Checked against the official Form 888 (08/26) on 19/10/2026. Always use the current form from Home Affairs; our tool fills that form, not a copy.

What it is
OldA statutory declaration by a supporting witness
NowA supporting statement (not a statutory declaration, since July 2023)
Witnessed by a JP or qualified person
OldRequired
NowNot needed
“Declared at” and qualified person details

NowEvidence of current name, age and, where applicable, citizenship or permanent residency; no certification mentioned

NowHome phone, mobile and email; giving an email means agreeing to electronic communication (since 11/24)

How it works

You set it up once. Each witness spends a few minutes on their phone.

No forms emailed back and forth, no Acrobat on anyone's phone, no retyping messages into PDF boxes.

For the two of you

  1. 1

    Set up your case

Applicant and partner names, visa type (820/801, 309/100 or 300) and your email. Transaction reference number if you have one.

  2. 2

    Invite up to 3 witnesses

Each gets a private link that only shows the names they need for questions 1 and 2.

  3. 3

    Watch progress

Your dashboard shows each witness as not started, in progress, submitted or approved.

  4. 4

    Preview, pay and fill

Check every answer in the preview and pay AUD 19 once. Then download the current Form 888 from Home Affairs, drop it in, and your browser fills a copy for each witness.

For each witness (free)

  1. 1

Open the link on any phone

A short intro explains what Form 888 is for and the warning about false statements.

  2. 2

    Answer guided questions

Prompts help them remember specifics: how they met you, how often you're in touch, things you've shared.

  3. 3

    Review and approve

They read the whole form as it will appear and approve it. Nothing goes on the form without their approval.

  4. 4

    Sign and attach ID

They get a checklist of the ID evidence the form asks for, and sign the form you send them.

What you receive

  • Fields stay editable in Acrobat Reader for last-minute typos
  • Every line of text sits on the form's printed lines

When an answer is longer than the box on the form, the box is filled to its last line and the rest continues on a page headed with the witness's name and the question.

Their words, never ours

We help your witnesses say what they know. We never write it for them.

A Form 888 is the witness's own statement, and false or misleading statements carry serious penalties. So the tool asks, prompts and formats. The words are theirs.

What the tool does

  • Ask the questions on the form, one at a time, with prompts
  • Show clearly labelled, fictional style examples
  • Fit the answers onto the official form, adding a continuation page when needed
  • Show the witness the whole form to review before they approve it

What it never does

  • Write, suggest or invent facts, events or opinions
  • Tell you whether your statements or evidence are “enough”
  • Give advice about your visa application
  • Change the official form's wording, declaration or warnings
Question 3 of 5Saved

How do you know Mei and Daniel, and how often are you in contact?

  • How did you meet each of them?
  • How did you come to know them as a couple?
  • How often do you see or talk to them?
  • Something you did together recently
Mei and I shared a flat in Carlton for two years

Style example · fictional

“I’ve known Sam since we started at the same school in 2012. I first met Alex when…”

Choosing witnesses

Who can write a Form 888

People who have seen your relationship up close. The form's own instructions have the final say; read them before you choose.

  • Someone aged 18 or over
  • Who knows both the visa applicant and their partner or fiancé(e)
  • And knows the history of their relationship
  • They don't have to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident (if they are, they give evidence of it)
  • Who can give evidence of their current name and age
  • Who understands the Department may contact them for further comment or an interview

ID stays with the witness

We never ask for ID documents. Each witness gets a checklist and gives copies to you to attach with their statement.

Form 888 ID evidence explained

Form 888 questions

General information about the form and our tool. Not migration advice.

What is Form 888?

Form 888 is the Department of Home Affairs form for a supporting statement in a Partner or Prospective Marriage visa application. Someone who knows you both describes how they know you and why they believe your relationship is genuine and continuing.

Is Form 888 still a statutory declaration? Does it need a JP?

No. Since July 2023, Form 888 has been a supporting statement, not a statutory declaration: it has no JP or qualified-person witness and no “declared at” section. So it doesn't need a JP or other qualified witness. Separately, the subclass 820 page asks applicants who don't hold a substantive visa for at least two Commonwealth statutory declarations, and says current and previous versions of Form 888 don't satisfy that requirement. Check the visa page for your situation.

How many Form 888s do we need?

Home Affairs' partner and prospective marriage visa pages say: “You must provide statements from 2 witnesses”. The form tells the person making it: “You may be asked to submit up to 3 separate statements during the processing of the visa application.” One payment covers up to 3 witnesses, so you can prepare an extra one if you choose.

Do you write the statements for us?

No. Every sentence about your relationship is written by your witness. We ask the questions, show prompts and fictional style examples, and put their approved answers on the official form. Statements must be true and in the witness's own words; false or misleading statements carry serious penalties.

Where does the official form come from?

From Home Affairs, every time. You download the current Form 888 from the Department's website and drop it into your dashboard, and your browser fills in a copy for each witness. The official form never passes through our servers, and you use whichever version Home Affairs publishes when you download it.

Do our witnesses need to pay or create an account?

No. Each witness opens a private link, answers on their phone or computer and approves their statement. They never pay and never sign up.

How does a witness sign the form?

The PDF you download is filled in but unsigned. The witness signs in the signature box and dates it. Neither Form 888 nor the visa pages say whether an electronic signature is accepted; the form has a signature box and a date field. Home Affairs' forms page describes forms that are “filled in online and then printed to be signed”.

What ID does a witness need to attach?

The person completing Form 888 must provide documentary evidence of their current name, age and, where applicable, Australian citizenship or permanent residency, for example a copy of their birth certificate, Australian passport or a passport containing a permanent visa. Each witness gets a checklist. We never ask them to upload ID to us.

When do we pay?

After at least one witness has submitted their answers and you've checked them in the preview. One payment of AUD 19 unlocks the final forms for all your witnesses, including those who finish later.

Is GST included in the price?

Yes. AUD 19 is the total you pay. Where Australian GST applies, it's already included; nothing is added at checkout.

Can we get a refund?

No, all sales are final and we don't give change-of-mind refunds. That's why you check every answer in the preview before you pay. If something doesn't work as described, write to us and we'll fix it. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law aren't affected.

What happens to our answers and files?

The finished PDFs are made in your browser and never stored by us. The answers are deleted automatically 30 days after payment (or after the case was created, whichever is later), and you can delete everything sooner from your dashboard. We keep only the payment record for accounting.

Is this a government service or migration advice?

No. Partner Visa Kit is an independent document tool and is not affiliated with the Department of Home Affairs. We don't give migration advice or assess your case; for that, talk to a registered migration agent or lawyer.

Does the person making a Form 888 have to be an Australian citizen?

No. Since July 2023 the person making a Form 888 no longer has to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Form 888 must be completed by someone who is at least 18 and knows the visa applicant, their partner or fiancé(e), and the history of their relationship. If they are an Australian citizen or permanent resident, the visa pages ask for evidence of it, such as a passport or birth certificate.

Which visas is this for?

Partner visas (subclasses 820/801 onshore and 309/100 offshore) and the Prospective Marriage visa (subclass 300): the visas Form 888 is used for.
